Medical check-ups at birth

Birth

The birth of our baby is not only a physical event, it is also a spiritual event, since we are born as parents and as a family. We are entering a very sensitive stage of our lives full of changes and challenges. This new member of the family requires all the attention, affection and care that we can give him so that he can build his basic trust in the people around him, so informing ourselves and preparing ourselves will help to overcome the fears and difficulties that may arise.

Before being discharged, the baby will be evaluated by the pediatrician or general practitioner who will check breathing, skin color, effective feeding, presence of urination (urine) and bowel movements. He will also give recommendations and give you the first vaccines: BCG (tuberculosis) and hepatitis B, both vaccines are mandatory and are covered by the health system.

Baby checkups

At the time of birth, the baby must be seen by a doctor or pediatrician, who will perform the baby's first examination, take measurements and perform routine examinations of the newborn baby.

Two tests are performed: blood typing to determine blood type and neonatal TSH to determine thyroid gland function. The results of these tests should be evaluated at the baby's first check-up visit, after leaving the hospital.

The doctor or pediatrician will give the authorization for the baby to leave, the order for the check-up appointment and will give the parents home care instructions.

Take advantage of this moment to clarify your doubts or concerns regarding baby care!

Once discharged, the baby should be checked during the first week (between the third and fifth day of life) by a pediatrician, general practitioner or health personnel. In this check-up, the pediatrician evaluates weight, skin color (jaundice), signs of infection of the umbilical stump, presence of heart murmurs, among others.

In the first days, the baby's weight loss is normal, which should be less than 10% of the baby's weight at birth.

During the first two years of life, the baby must have frequent evaluations by the medical personnel to whom it has access through its health system, to evaluate aspects of physical growth (weight, height and head circumference), development, and vaccination schedule. , eating habits, bowel habit and sleeping pattern. During these appointments it is the opportunity to clarify doubts and concerns regarding the well-being and upbringing of the children.

We recommend making a list of doubts and concerns about your baby before the check-up to consult with the doctor.
